Nordic Physics Days 2020

Dear Colleagues,

The Nordic Physical Societies, and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Uppsala University, are glad to announce that the Nordic Physics Days 2020 conference is planned to be held in Uppsala, Sweden, in August.

The conference will also be the opportunity to celebrate the jubilee of the Swedish Physical Society that started in Uppsala 100 years ago, in 1920. The abstract call is open and the deadline for the submission has been delayed to 11th May 2020 (https://www.nordicphysicsdays2020.se).

We are aware that the COVID 19 outbreak is causing the cancellation of many events and conferences around the world and this puts some concerns about any commitment in the coming months. However, we are still considering it realistic to continue with the planning and organization of the Nordic Physics days 2020, and for this reason we postponed the abstract submission deadline. We are following the evolution of the situation expecting to have a clearer idea in the next few weeks regarding whether we can maintain the event, or whether we need to postpone it.

The Nordic Physics Days 2020 is planned to take place between the 19th and the 21st August 2020 in the Uppsala University Main Building (or Uppsala University Hall) in the very centre of the city. If we can maintain this timeline the conference is planned to start at lunch time on Wednesday, August 19th and finish at lunch time on Friday, August 21st.  The Nordic Physics Days 2020, as the previous editions, will comprise plenary sessions for a larger audience and several parallel sessions which will be organized by the various sections of the Nordic Physical societies, and will be dedicated on contributions from the different fields of physics.

The conference will also host a symposium about Physics Education Research (PER) with many esteemed speakers. The PER focus will be on Representations in the teaching and learning of physics.

The last event of the conference will be the inauguration of a new EPS Historical site in Uppsala dedicated to Anders Jonas Ångström (1814-1874) who contributed to different fields of physics but who is most known as the founder of optical spectroscopy and the introduction of the new length unit  1Å=10-10

Among the already confirmed keynotes and plenary speakers we are proud to count:

Prof. Michael Mayor, Nobel laurate 2019,

Prof. P. Rudolf,  President of the European Physical Society,

Prof. Eckhard Elsen, CERN,

Prof. Anne L’Huillier,  Lund University.

For the PER symposium:

Prof. Paula Heron , University of Washington,

Prof. Urban Ericksson, Lund University,

Prof. Saalih Allie, University of Cape Town,

Prof. John Airey, Stockholm University,

Prof. Michael Wittman, University of Maine,

Prof. Noah Finkelstein, University of Colorado at Boulder,

for more information look at https://www.nordicphysicsdays2020.se/speakers/

The parallel sessions dedicated to the different fields of  physics, and organized by the different sections of the Nordic Physical Societies include the following topics:

  • Atomic molecular and optical physics
  • Elementary particle physics and astroparticle physics
  •  Astronomy, astro-/space-physics and plasma physics
  • Gravitation
  • Condensed matter physics and nano physics
  • Nuclear physics
  • Women in physics
  • Physics Education and Physics Education Research (PER)

Please note that the call for abstracts is open until 11th May. For the submission of the abstracts, please use the link and the instructions given in the conference homepage (https://www.nordicphysicsdays2020.se/ ) specifying which section you want to contribute to.

The abstracts will be reviewed by a panel of referees and a notification of acceptance will be sent by email by the beginning of June.

In view of the current general public health situation, please consider the following important points:

  • we recommend you to wait for making any travel plans for the time being, to avoid any potential cancellation costs,
  •  we will do our best to ensure that the Nordic Physics Days 2020 goes ahead, but we reserve the right to cancel at any time. If the event is cancelled and you already registered, we will offer a full refund of your registration fee.

We would be grateful if you could forward this message to all persons/colleagues who might be interested in participating to the conference.

If you have any questions about the conference, do not hesitate to get in touch with the local committee.

We hope to see you in Uppsala in August!

Carla Puglia for the local organizing committee
